🔥 The Book in 3 Sentences

Project Hail Mary is amazingly fun and I loved the book because of it. The relationship developed by the main characters, Mr. Grace and Rocky, the alien is just amazing and how they took years to communicate.

This is my first book ever written by Andy Weir and I highly recommend it if you like Sci-Fi and funny characters.

Summary Notes

Rayland Grace is a classroom teacher who assumes himself as a scientist after some years of failure; however, he is an outstanding teacher. The problem of the novel arrives, and this is that there are some beings called <<Astrophages>>, tiny to human sight, that come to the solar system from a very distant planet. They have a single mission, to eat all they can of energy from this and other sources; the worst thing is that by doing this, the Sun will go out, and all humans are in danger because, in the coming years, half of the human and animal population would disappear.

For this, Stratt recruits Grace, a retired scientist who knows the Astrophrages very well and asks him to study them. Mr. Graces agrees, and this is why hundreds of scientists around the world join him. Grace is in a spaceship built by humans, and they embark him to a distant planet that apparently the astrophragms have not eaten it; what’s his mission? Find out why this planet is not infected since astrophragms devour everything that contains energy in their path.

13 light-years, a ship, and Grace wakes up in it without knowing what to do, what he is doing there, why he has cables all over his body, including his intimate parts, as well as not knowing why two of his companions on the ship are dead. During the story, Grace begins to remember by fragments what it took him to be in a spaceship and what his mission was.

Suddenly he sees a spaceship called Blip-A where he meets an alien, whom he nicknames Rocky from the planet Eridani. He uses musical notes to communicate, and Grace begins a friendship there that helped to decipher the language of each one and to understand that they had a particular reason, to understand how to get the astrophragms out of their solar system to preserve life on their respective planets.

After months and months, both devise a plan to remove from the atmosphere of the planet Tau Ceti a sample of what lies in it. They make a chain of Xiomite, a highly resistant material, much more than Rocky’s diamond for almost everything, mainly to make a wall between the Blip-A ship and the Hail Mary.

Once the sample is taken, after difficulties with angular positioning in the ship, Grace detects cells similar to an amoebae, which Grace himself nicknamed taumebas. Tau- because it comes from Tau Ceti and -mebas because it looks like an amoeba. This one devoured the astrophragms.

Once they finally put a few incubators up and running to grow enough taumebas, both Grace and Rocky headed to their planets. One last problem haunted him, and that is that Grace realized that the taumebas were so small in turn that they adapted to the material of the Xiomita and left to escape. After this, Grace had to make a decision, go for his friend Rocky since the Xiomita is in all his ship and could kill the entire Eridani civilization or go to Earth.

Grace decided to send a beetle probe to Earth, made sure everything was going well and set out to search for Blip-A to try to save his dear friend Rocky, his only friend.

He immediately goes to look for Rocky, he finds him. This one saves Rocky’s ship, and they both live in Euridiani, and everyone is happy to have an intelligent alien-like Grace in him, so they do everything to grow food with the properties of the protein, carbohydrates, and fat this one needs. Grace had realized that he sent enough information and farm of taumebas and astrographs so that they could save the solar system; in the end, he knew that humans could figure out what to do.

Once old on the planet Euridiani, Rocky brings him a piece of good news. The Sun has recovered its power to the maximum; therefore, life on Earth was also saved.

Grace teaches the Euridian children, the language was easier to understand, and Rocky learned English.
